Chapter 13

The 3R’s in Community
While the spirit of neighborliness was important on the frontier because neighbors were so few, it is even more important now because our neighbors are so many.   — Lady Bird Johnson

Reciprocity, reliability and respect apply just as easily to those in the community that surrounds you — in some cases, even more so.  Yet, as a culture, we’ve become accustomed to the lack of social graces and just plain old-fashioned manners.

Reciprocity of effort means saying “thank you” to the sales clerk or “welcome” to your customers.  A former college professor of mine who specialized in resort public relations called this effort “The Five O’clock Cup.”  He conducted seminars with seasonal resort restaurant workers.  The idea was to welcome guests with small courtesies such as turning the coffee cup handle to an easy to reach 5:00 position.  After all, if customers make an effort to patronize your business, you want to make them feel welcome.  It’s such a simple concept, yet how often do you get the feeling they are doing you a favor by serving you?
