Chapter 10
The 3R’s in Intimate Relationships Overheard in the office: “If I had these three R’s in my marriage, I’d still be married.” In order for a relationship to be considered a truly viable “intimate” relationship, it must contain all three of the 3R’s for the majority of the time. This means reciprocity of effort, reliability of commitment and respect for you and your values. One reason intimate relationships are so intense is because they contain the possibility of deep emotional hurt. We are more vulnerable than we are in, for example, social or business relationships. If you are examining a relationship for its potential, a recommended approach is to routinely check for the 3R’s reciprocity, reliability, and respect before your feelings for the other person get to the point where you lose perspective. |
