Respect

Respect your fellow human being, treat them fairly, disagree with them honestly, enjoy their friendship, explore your thoughts about one another candidly, work together for a common goal and help one another achieve it. — Bill Bradley

How about that Soup Nazi on the sitcom Seinfield?  He didn’t care if or how he offended any of his long line of loyal customers by shouting: “No soup for you!”  And let’s not forget the classic Rodney Dangerfield jokes about not getting respect.  Although lack of respect can be funny in a comedy routine, it’s not so funny when we feel disrespected in a meaningful relationship.

Respect does not necessarily mean agreement or compliance, but rather non-violation.  It certainly doesn’t mean being liked or, for that matter, liking the other . . .
